France: Perched Villages of Southern France

France: Perched Villages of Southern France

"Highly Recommended! Just outside of Monte Carlo lies a series of 'perched villages,' medieval towns which grew up in the mountains and have retained their historical flavor over the years. The filmmakers have captured the visual elegance of the unusual architecture and managed to impart an idea of the lives of its inhabitants." -Video Librarian
One is certain to hear of the Cannes Film Festival, the French Riviera and the Côte d'Azur when thinking of visiting the southeastern part of France; however, for adventurous souls who also love history, it is a must to travel just outside of Monte Carlo and discover a series of France's "perched villages," which were built in seemingly impossible places high in the Mediterranean Alps and date back to medieval days. We discover that great artists such as Picasso, Chagall and Matisse came to these villages to absorb the intense light, as well as to enjoy the obscurity and anonymity. We travel on windy roads and visit spectacular villages such as Saorge, which spreads out like an amphitheatre high above the breathtaking La Roya gorge; this ancient commune has been called "one of the 40 most beautiful villages in the country;" it too is home to the Notre-Dame-des-Miracles' monastery, which was completed in 1660. We also visit the dramatic village of Peillon, which is situated near a sheer cliff face with homes stacked high in the hills, built centuries ago obviously for protection reasons; yet today continue to retain their beautiful and historical flavor.
