The Victoria Cross

Victoria Cross, The

The Victoria Cross or "VC," as it is affectionately referred to by the soldiers who earned this treasured medal of honor, is the highest military decoration which is, or has been, awarded for valor "in the face of the enemy" to members of the British and Commonwealth armed forces and previous British Empire territories. It dates back to January 29, 1856, when Queen Victoria honored heroes during the Crimean War, and was the first award that did not discriminate against class or rank. Today, due to the diminishing rank of these heroes, VCs are appearing in sophisticated auction houses as sought-after collector's items. In this classic documentary we discover that all the medals are made at Hancocks & Co. in London and jeweler David Callahan shows us how he insures that medals to be auctioned are authentic. Most importantly, we learn the heroic stories of a number of VC awardees, including Godfrey Place, Charles Upham, Vic Turner, William Hall, the first black man awarded the medal, John Mahoney, David Curry, Paul Doucette, Charles Cecil Merritt, Fred Tilston, Bob Foote, Keith Elliott, Parkash Singh, and Ernest Alvia "Smokey" Smith; through their eyes we are reminded of the price of heroism of all soldiers, both yesterday and today.
