Namibia: A Nation's Challenge

Namibia: A Nation's Challenge

"Highly Recommended! After 105 years of foreign rule, Namibia, Africa's last colony, gained its independence, and this program covers President Sam Nujoma's address at Lincoln University outlining his country's future. The impeccable rendition of the Namibian National Anthem, and the English translation at the end, add an emotional and nostalgic flavor to the program. And the background information on Namibia provides viewers with a broader understanding of the issues at hand. Once again, the producer brings an African treasure closer to our screen." -VRG Review
Namibia, after Mongolia, is the second least populated country in the world; it is situated in southern Africa on the Atlantic coast, and was named after the Namib Desert. It gained independence from South Africa in 1990 and still maintains close economic ties to South Africa. Today, Namibia is the world's fifth largest producer of uranium, and due to large investments in uranium mining it will become the largest exporter of uranium by the year 2015. Eco tourism is important to Namibia and it is the only country in the world to address conservation and protection of natural resources in its constitution. Much of what Namibia is today can be attributed to the country's first President, Samuel Nujoma, who was re-elected twice and served until 2005; he also served as President of the South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) from its founding in 1960 until 2007. In this historical program, Nujoma provides viewers with a broader understanding of Namibia; also, as he addresses an audience at Lincoln University, we are given a unique glimpse of this sometimes controversial but always determined leader. Produced by Chip Taylor and AVIO Productions. 99/10DE JSCA 15 min.
