Portugal

Tracing the history of Portugal from its capital, Lisbon, to the Algarve region, viewers get a true understanding of this country by meeting a variety of its people; then learn of its Moorish ties in Sintra. We begin our visit in Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in the world. Archaeological evidence suggests that Lisbon was a Phoenician trading center by 1200 BC and later occupied by Romans and Moors. Now Lisbon is Portugal's political and economic capital and its largest city. Our first stop in Lisbon is St. George's Castle, a fortified citadel that overlooks the city. From there we go to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Belem Tower, which is a sentinel over the Tagus River that protected the city from pirates in times past. Jeronimos Monastery, another World Heritage Site, houses the tomb of explorer Vasco da Gama. From Lisbon we venture into the rolling hills of Portugal's northern region and talk with a shepherd about his life, then move on to Algarve, the southern region with its beautiful beaches bathed by the warmth of the Gulf Stream. Walking the narrow streets of Sintra in this region, we see the Moorish influence in the architecture there, but other architecture also can be seen. On our visit to Pena Castle we see a major example of 19th century Romantic architecture, and the Seteais Palace is a neo-classical building that is now a hotel. 03/09DE IJSCA 30 min.
