Europe 10: Ukraine - Kiev and Lvov (Lviv)

Europe 10: Ukraine - Kiev and Lvov (Lviv)

Ukraine became independent from the former Soviet Union in 1991. To gain insight into this country, which has a history of East Slavic culture that dates back to Medieval times, this program guides us through two of the country's most well-known and important cities: Kiev, the largest city and capital, and Lvov (Lviv), the cultural center and largest city of western Ukraine. In Kiev, our guide, Vladimir Poberezhniy, brings us on an historical and cultural tour of the city, first visiting many of the cathedrals and churches, including the St. Volodymyr's Cathedral, St. Sophia Cathedral, St. Andrews Church and the Monastery of the Kiev Caves. We see key monuments, such as the Three Brothers of Kiev, the mythical founders of Kiev, in Navodnytsky Park; also the gigantic metal statue, "Mother Motherland." Whether cruising by river or meeting locals in town, people here we discover are very friendly, and we see Ukrainian folk groups and dancers at local restaurants. We take a side trip to the Folk Architecture Museum, which consists of over 400 old homes, mills and structures; also, we meet Anatoly Moikanoux, a Russian dancer, who explains the history of folk dance, which is an important in the Ukrainian culture. Next, in Lvov (Lviv), our guide, Irene Poplavok, shows us a city filled with architecture that ranges from Medieval to Baroque. We visit the Ukrainian Fine Arts' Museum, which houses a vast array of folk art and icons; the Lvov Opera House, where you can see Ukrainian Folk Opera; also another way to enjoy the local music is by visiting the music festivals, which are performed in local parks. 02/09DE IJSCA 30 min.
