Our African Heritage

Our African Heritage

"Recommended. This is a very good program; Dr. DeVane introduces children to African dress, symbols, musical instruments and songs." -Kris Beyers, Perry Township Schools
Dr. Evelyn DeVane, in an African-American Music Education Specialist who loves to introduce children to cultural aspects of Africa during her hands-on workshops. She begins this program geographically acquainting a class of elementary children to Africa; then she describes the African clothing she is wearing, which is made of Kente cloth; she explains that this material is indigenous to Ghana and has a female pattern, while a man would wear clothes with a male pattern; also she shows the children cloth made with an Adinkra pattern, which originated in the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), a country that borders Ghana; then she uses a pair of hand-made sandals to introduce the Ashanti group who live in central Ghana. Next she captivates the children with a collection of instruments, including bells, a gourd rattle, also called a Shekere, which is the loudest sounding instrument in the world; then a wood rattle and an African drum. Finally, with a sing-a-long, she teaches them an African song with African words. Produced by AVIO Productions. 01/08DE IJ 10 min.
