Spain 2: The Canary Islands

Spain 2: The Canary Islands

Welcome to the Canary Islands, an island paradise and a tourist's delight! This cluster of seven Spanish islands near the northern coast of Africa has a mild climate and is filled with natural attractions to thrill any visitor. We arrive at the port of Santa Cruz on the island of Tenerife to begin our tour. This island is the largest of the Canaries and the most populous. We visit Laurel Park, where exotic birds fly among the trees and some 1,500 different parrot species call home. While there we watch the parrot and dolphin shows before moving on to Costa de Martianez, a complex of swimming pools and an artificial lake, and then to the world-famous Playa de Las Americas resort. For a much more tranquil setting, we try La Palma Island with its black sandy beaches created by volcanic lava. Santa Cruz La Palma is its capital city, and we enjoy the historic streets and elegant 17th and 18th century homes there. Our last stop is the sleepy village of Barlovento on the northern coast of the island, where we learn how the locals use long poles to navigate the rocky terrain. 03/09DE IJSCA 15 min.
