Germany 2: Romantic Road and Intro to the Rhine

Germany 2: Romantic Road and Intro to the Rhine

The scenic route of the Romantic Road, from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps to the wine country of central Germany, is one of the most popular ways to see medieval Germany. Begin your trip at the fairytale castles of the Schwangau area, many of which were built by King Ludwig II of Germany to express his idea of being a king. Then journey to the fortified cities of Dinkelsbuhl and Rothenburg where the Middle Ages come alive. Halfway on the Romantic Road is Dinkelsbuhl, where visitors can stroll the quaint streets past half-timbered houses and shop along the way for art, handmade pottery, and woodcarvings. In Rothenburg visit the mile-long wall around the city to take in its grand views before shopping for cuckoo clocks and steins. An alternative way to tour the area is by cruise ship, and a Rhine River cruise is one of the best ways to see the country. Visitors can start their cruise at either of the ancient cities of Koblenz or Mainz and stop at most of the small villages along the river. A highlight of the river cruise is a view of the rocky bluff called Lorelei, site of many shipwrecks and the source of the legend where a siren lured sailors to their deaths on the rocks by singing. 01/08DE IJSCA 30 min.
