Iceland

"Recommended. This is a good program to introduce viewers to this rarely-visited location." -CITC Review
Don't let its name fool you, there's a lot more to Iceland than ice. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, between mainland Europe and Greenland, the Republic of Iceland is an island country, whose history dates back to the year 874; today its population is over 320,000 and its capital and largest city is Reykjavík. After England, Iceland is the 2nd-largest island in Europe, which is filled with vast volcanic ranges, many geysers, lakes, glaciers and fjords. Although two-thirds of its mainland is tundra, a cold combination of mountains and sand, the warm North Atlantic Gulf Stream helps create a habitable environment with a temperate climate and it's coastlines, where the majority of the population lives, usually remain ice-free throughout the winter. Through the centuries, people of Nordic and Celtic descent settled here and because of the many cultural, economic and linguistic similarities, Iceland is considered to be part of Scandinavia. Today, although an isolated place, it is advanced in many ways, including the use of geothermic heat and greenhouse experimentation. Produced by Interfilm. 02/08DE IJSCA 22 min.
