Women in the Spirit of Martial Arts

Women in the Spirit of Martial Arts

This fast-moving program introduces viewers to three women who have set goals for themselves, which require great physical and mental commitment. To accomplish their goals, they have elected to practice martial arts. First we meet Louise Lu, aka "The Frisco Kid," a female kickboxing champion, who discusses the positive and negative sides to being a woman kickboxer. Next we meet Claudia Albergaria, a Brazilian instructor of Capoeira, which is an Afro-Brazilian art form and fighting style that was brought to Brazil from Angola in the 16th century; here she acquaints viewers with this martial art that ritualizes movement from martial arts, games, and dance. Lastly, we meet Miyako Tanaka, who has been an instructor in the traditional Japanese martial arts for over 30 years. Here we learn about Naginatajutsu, the Japanese martial art of wielding a naginata, a weapon the wives of Samurai warriors used to protect themselves as far back as the 17th century. Produced by Uwe Blesching. 03/09DE JSCA 30 min.
