Summer Camp (Juvenile Probation)

Summer Camp (Juvenile Probation)

"Highly Recommended. This is an excellent eye-opening documentary. We go from the mean streets to behind the scenes at Camp Mendenhall in California to witness its "tough love" program; then we hear directly from the young men involved and get their view of this type of program. Overall, the program gives viewers an opportunity to debate if the hard-core military approach used is a legitimate way to straighten out juvenile delinquents." -National Media Review
The documentary Scared Straight won an Oscar back in 1978 as the best in its category. After that film's success, the "scared straight" concept became popular and many states in the U.S. created juvenile probation programs based on the concept as a way to rehabilitate juvenile delinquents. Whether that idea works is still a controversial question. This program documents such a program established by the Los Angeles County Probation Department at its Camp Mendenhall, a boot-camp-style probation camp set up to deal with serious juvenile law breakers. Its purpose is to introduce military-like, boot-camp-style discipline into the lives of young men with the hope of affecting a positive change. Here we gain a rare inside-look at the camp, witnessing the strict atmosphere that exists. Although debatable for all juvenile lawbreakers, the concept we discover does work for some of the felons, such as Sgt. Flores, Sgt. Santiago, Pvt. Whitney and Pvt. Ortiz, who stood up to the ordeals of the discipline and moved on to better lives. Produced by John Sandoval. 02/09DE JSCA 30 min.
