Germany 3: A Rhine River Cruise

Germany 3: A Rhine River Cruise

Our cruise begins in Cologne, Germany, a vibrant city filled with Gothic architecture. Visitors first tour the city's famous Cologne Cathedral, then board the floating hotel, The Britannia, to begin the cruise itself. Visitors are captivated by the picturesque views of castles, vineyards, and the scenic countryside as the ship makes its way down the Rhine River and then docks at a small village where there is an opportunity to shop and sample local food. The first major stop of the cruise is Linz, where visitors stroll the streets surrounded by colorful half-timbered buildings and view a marionette show by a sidewalk artisan. The next stop is Rudesheim, a city famous for its vineyards and the hustle and bustle of its drinking street, the Drosselgasse, but there are also cozy corners and walking trails to view the Rhine's oldest castle. Our cruise moves next to Mainz, home of the Gutenberg Museum that displays an original Gutenberg Bible. Mainz has over 2,000 years of history and even though more than 80% of the city was destroyed during WWII, most of its historic areas remain intact. Other stops on the cruise include Speyer, Heidelberg, and Strasbourg, where the influence of France can be seen in its small cafes and its Notre Dame Cathedral. Our cruise ends in Basil, Switzerland, where the cultures of Germany, France, and Switzerland meet. Our Rhine River cruise has taken us through 2,000 years of history to the lively art scene of contemporary Europe. 01/08DE IJSCA 30 min.
