Germany 4: Lake Constance and the Mosel Wine Region

Germany 4: Lake Constance and the Mosel Wine Region

The Lake Constance district in Germany is located at the northern edge of the Alps on the Rhine River and is known as the German Riviera because of its charm and wealth. This area has been inhabited since the Stone Age when homes were built on stilts and is steeped in history The island of Lindau is the first stop on our tour. Established in 800 AD when a convent was built there, it is now a haven for water sports. A boat ferry takes us next to the medieval fishing village of Meersburg, built around 1299, where we can tour a castle and the Grand Palace. Another ferry hop and we are on the island of Mainau where the main attraction is the estate of a Swedish count and its Baroque church with its paintings. Spectacular gardens and Germany's largest butterfly sanctuary are also part of the estate. From the Lake District, take Germany's super train, the Deutsch Bundesbahn, to the Mosel River region. The many wine estates located in such medieval towns as Ediger and Veinstein are major attractions, and the town of Trier, which is Germany's oldest city. The beauty and charm of the wine region will entice all visitors! 01/08DE IJSCA 30 min.
