Hawaii 2: Oahu and Maui

Hawaii 2: Oahu and Maui

Oahu is rich in history and tradition, and its unique blend of cultures is seen in everyday life. Our first stop on the beautiful island is the world-famous Waikiki Beach with its stunning view of Diamond Head in the background, where we enjoy a surfing lesson. Next we honor the WWII dead as we visit the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific located in a majestic volcanic crater known as the Punchbowl and then on to Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial to pay our respects there also. A major attraction on Oahu is the Polynesia Cultural Center, an entertainment area that preserves 8 island villages and exhibits, where we enjoy an authentic luau. We take a ferry to the island of Maui, a tropical playground with small-town charm, to visit the Clouds Rest Protea Farm where more than 1,500 varieties of flowers are grown. Another ferry hop and we're on the small island of Lanai, once the home of a pineapple plantation but now a quaint village filled with art galleries, restaurants, and boutiques. While on Lanai, we visit Keahiakawelo, "Garden of the Gods," an otherworldly rock garden created by centuries of erosion where people build stone towers as prayers to the gods. More traditional attractions are the luxury resorts and golfing opportunities on Lanai. 02/09DE IJSCA 30 min.
