USA 9: Human Rights on Stage

"Recommended. The technical standards of the program are very high. The key points uniquely illustrated could be used for discussion triggers by community groups, or in courses dealing with human rights or social awareness issues." -EMRO Review
Footage from the incident in March 1991, when Los Angeles police officers brutally beat Rodney King begins this program. The police officers who were involved were acquitted, and the result led to national outrage, local rioting and increased awareness of human rights among races. Then Anna Deavere Smith, who stars in her one-woman Broadway show called Twilight: Los Angeles, gives an exclusive interview focusing on the social commentary of the play. Next the Human Rights School in Brooklyn, New York, is featured. Brian Peter Falk reports as we see interviews from students at the school, along with teacher John Flemming and Frances Lucerna, Director of El Puente Academy. 01/12DE JSCA 20 min.
