USA 6: US, Mexico and NAFTA

USA 6: US, Mexico and NAFTA

How do you spell controversial? Try NAFTA, an acronym for the North American Free Trade Agreement, signed by the governments of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and which came into force on January 1, 1994. This program looks back at the beginning years of this controversial agreement, which purportedly had American industry flooding into Mexico seeking cheaper labor and manufacturing costs; it also questions how human rights standards may be threatened. Today, the United States Department of Agriculture reports, "NAFTA is one of the most successful trade agreements in history and has contributed to significant increases in agricultural trade and investment between the United States, Canada and Mexico and has benefited farmers, ranchers and consumers throughout North America." 01/12DE JSCA 30 min.
