7. India: The Himalayas - Other Times, Other Places

"Highly Recommended. This is a documentary to treasure. Here we learn the story of a time in history from people who literally experienced the blending of cultures, the open-air spiritual life of the Tibetan and Sikkimese cultures and the structured social life of the British who commercialized the tea business here." -National Media Review
Between 1858 and 1947 the British rule in the Indian subcontinent was known as the British Raj (reign). To reflect back on those days, this classic program takes us to the beautiful and graceful Himalayan Mountains of northern India to Darjeeling, a town in the state of West Bengal famous for its Darjeeling tea, which served as the summer capital during this period of time; then north to Sikkim, famous for its Buddhist patron saint, Guru Rinpoche, and the tallest statue of the saint in the world. Here we meet a unique group of people: Mrs. Tenduf La of the Windamere Heritage Hotel offers her perspective of the British, Tibetan and Sikkimese culture; Teddy Young, the last British Tea Plantation Manager, describes the structured social life, filled with sports activities and formal balls; Michael Cross, the last headmaster of the former St. Paul's School for Boys; and Yapo S. Yongda, known as Captain Yongda, a socially-minded lama, originally of the Pemayangtse Buddhist Monastery, who is Chairman of the DPC Academy, which helps destitute and underprivileged children.
