Mosaics: Housing America's Migrants

Mosaics: Housing America's Migrants

Although there are trained migrant workers, such as construction workers or electricians, who travel from one construction job to another, or firefighters who travel to battle dangerous blazes; for the most part migrant workers in the United States come to America as low-wage workers and perform manual labor in various agriculture situations; they are mostly people from Mexico and Central America. These men and women play an important role in the collection and distribution of seasonal agricultural crops; however, providing affordable housing for these workers continues to be one of the most complex problems facing the country. In this documentary, Emmy-award winning producer Roberta Cantow (Clotheslines) utilizes the effect of "watching stained glass in motion" to address this concern. By viewing layers of imagery, with close-ups of migrants, along with voices of fleeting "memories" of village life versus the realities of today's living conditions, viewers are shown the human faces and hear the heartbreaking struggles behind the issue; we are led to see that these are real people with real problems and the need for a positive solution needs to be more properly addressed. Produced by Roberta Cantow. 03/09DE JSCA 15 min.
