Vietnam: Forget-Me-Not

Vietnam: Forget-Me-Not

"Recommended. Peace is always a recommended alternative. Here we see Americans who enhance the peace process while they are the guests of Vietnamese veterans; we get a glimpse of today's Vietnam, a place of peace, as we witness Vietnam veterans returning to Vietnam in search of a true peace." -National Media Review
"Vietnam...the name alone can evoke deep emotions and opinions. But let's gaze beyond the cloud of the past to the light of reconciliation and future promise." So begins this historic story of a peace-building delegation from Santa Cruz, California, who visited Vietnam to enhance the peace process while they were guests of the Vietnamese Veterans Association. Here we get a glimpse of Vietnam long after the war from the bustling streets of cities such as Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City to the country's lush countryside; also we see interviews from high-ranking officials to street kids. We learn of the Vietnam Friendship Village Project, a living symbol of peace created by veterans, all former adversaries, from six different countries, which today offers care for orphaned children, as well as elderly or disabled adults; in Hue we discover traditional musicians and enjoy the cultural treasures of the Nguyen Dynasty; at China Beach we see the majestic coastline of central Vietnam; then meet local children at Non Nuoc; in Hoi An we visit an orphanage caring for children born with dioxin poisoning (Agent Orange); also, in Cu Chi Tunnels, we crawl through a subterranean labyrinth, originally used by the Viet Cong for protection against air raids, which is now a tourist attraction. Collectively, all are evidence that modern-day Vietnam is a place of peace and hope. Produced by L.B. Johnson. 04/08DE JSCA 50 min.
