Mexico: Tarahumara 1 - Threads of Change

Copper Canyon, located in northern Mexico in the Sierra Madre Mountains, is home to over 50,000 Tarahumaras (Raramuri), the largest group of native people in North America after the Navajo. Today, in spite of encroaching outsiders, these people still preserve their traditional ways; however, with tourism to the canyon increasing, their craft industry has begun to grow, which brings up the controversial and complex issue of the impact of Western technology on these Indian people. In this eye-opening documentary Anthropologist Susan Smith personally examines the tradition vs. technology issue as she and her team travel deep into Copper Canyon to bring the Tarahumara Indians a sewing machine. Viewers are given the rare chance to meet Tarahumarans, to learn more of their culture and to observe views from both sides of the tradition vs. technology issue. A part of the proceeds from the sale of this program go to the Tarahumara Mission Clinic in Creel, Mexico. Produced by Susan Smith. 02/09DE IJSCA 30 min.
