Daughters of the Midnight Sun

Daughters of the Midnight Sun

"Lapland, a culture without a country, lies in the northernmost part of Scandinavia. Many Sámi are nomads who, even today, follow the reindeer and live in tents for at least a part of the year. The scenes of the reindeer tagging, the rugged beauty of the landscape, and the discussions of the youth give invaluable insight into a proud people and an endangered, little-known culture." -Booklist
"Recommended. The production does not miss a beat or waste an image; it is marked by beautiful photography and a superb sense of detail." -VRG Review
Lapland (Lappland in Sweden), a province in northernmost Sweden, is part of a region in the world also referred to as the Land of the Midnight Sun, where, due to its proximity to the Arctic, the sun shines for 24 hours a day; it is an area sparsely populated by a nomadic people who prefer to be known as the Sámi and not Laplanders. Sámi are among the largest indigenous ethnic groups in Europe and though most lead relatively normal lives like most Europeans, a percentage of them continue to make a living as herders of reindeer for traditional and cultural reasons. This classic documentary offers the finest in cinematography to capture the nomadic lifestyle and real-life struggles these people encounter in this rugged landscape.
