Chinese Gold

Chinese Gold

"Recommended. This well-focused documentary’s intimate conversations create a personalized perspective of an era of history; it provides background descriptions of the Chinese Exclusion Act and its repeal, the development of Chinatown and private businesses, and the establishment of Chinese culture and customer in the adopted land." -Booklist
The year was 1851 and Chinese immigrants came to California to start a new life in a new world. However, they were not alone, thousands upon thousands of others came to settle here, hoping to lay claim to gold and riches. Almost immediately the Chinese suffered from prejudice, resentment and mistreatment; the U.S. Congress in 1882 went as far as passing the Chinese Exclusion Act, which began as a 10-year moratorium on Chinese labor immigration, but sentiment against Chinese immigration continued for over 60 years. However, despite the severe difficulties, generations of Chinese immigrants pursued their dreams and today Chinese Americans are engaged in every facet of American life. Based on the book by Sandy Lydon, Chinese Gold: The Chinese in the Monterey Bay Region, this classic documentary introduces us to members of the Chin, Chinn, Dong, Lam, Lee, Lew, Liu, Ow, Yee and Wong families; treasured family photos, extensive archival footage, political cartoons, and recollections of second-generation citizens help us trace the Chinese immigrant experience from those early days up to modern times.
