The Chumash of California: A Docent 's Story

Chumash of California, The: A Docent's Story

This classic program features Sylvia Khan, who was a docent at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in Los Angeles, California. In the first part of this program she welcomes viewers with a rousing retelling of a myth that explains how the Chumash Indians came to be known as "the people of the shell money"; then the non-stop tour continues as she shows how the Native Americans utilized all of nature, such as cooking with baskets and using handmade water pitchers, to conduct their lives. In the second part of the program Sylvia introduces viewers to the way of life Chumash people enjoyed in their villages over 200 years ago. Also her thorough discussion of village life comes alive as she offers a close-up look at authentic replicas of a basket house and a granary. Produced by Chip Taylor. 02/10DE PIJ 30 min.
