Wild Africa: Okavango

Wild Africa: Okavango

"Highly Recommended. Great on-location cinematography captures life in the wild of the great Okavango Delta." -National Media Review
The national parks, wildlife reserves, and freshwater marshlands of Botswana and Zimbabwe provide tenuous refuge to the most diverse array of wild animals on the planet. Climatic changes and seismic activity in southern Africa have caused river deltas and their marshlands to shrink, waterways to disappear, and natural water holes to dry up. Human intrusions in the form of predatory tourist operations, cattle ranching with its so called "veterinary fences," and ill conceived trans-regional highways have cut off natural animal migration routes and upset the delicate ecology of the area. In this program, enhanced by a dramatic original score, we are treated to spectacular footage of African wildlife in their natural habitat. Viewers travel by dugout canoe to Chief's Island in the Okavango Delta, where they can still experience an Africa "undisturbed by civilization"; by commuter air to remote sections of Moremi Game Reserve, where they get rare glimpses of endangered species of leopards and wild dogs; and by overland jeep to Chobe National Park, home of the world's largest elephant population and of the Savuti Region, where animals walk "the daily gauntlet of death" past natural predators to access the only water supply in the region. Viewers are not only left with images of beautiful African sunsets and frolicking lion cubs in one of the Earth's most majestic regions, but also with the realization that wildlife in this region is on the brink of extinction.
