Wave Dancers 2: Women Who Surf

Wave Dancers 2: Women Who Surf

Surfing was a sport dominated by male athletes for over 100 years; however, this classic program documents the time when women surfers won acceptance into the sport. Here we meet original world-class female surfers and the challenges they faced on and off the waves. Host Carol Hoyt talks with women surfers about the difficulties involved in gaining respect in a male dominated sport. In surfing, as in most sports, women had to endure ridicule, as well as to "prove themselves" by demonstrating that they possess the physical ability and mental toughness to compete in a potentially dangerous sport. We also see women surpassed those unfairly imposed "requirements" and today have added a new dimension to the sport of surfing. Besides displaying enviable physical strength, agility, and courage, women have brought a sense of grace and harmony to this sport. Through actual surfing footage viewers see that women surfers tend to float and merge with the waves, not dominate them, allowing the energy of the waves to flow through them; the result is a new synthesis of grace and power called "wave dancing."
