Israel: Jerusalem - The Golden City

Israel: Jerusalem - The Golden City

There is hardly a city in the world that inspires emotion more than Jerusalem. To people of Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith it is holy; to early traders it was the junction of three continents; to historians it is a city whose stones speak of kings, war, peace, heroic figures and civilization. In the midst of a barren and arid environment it is an oasis. At the edge of old city walls archaeologists examine stones that reveal a history that dates back over 3,000 years of this place also known as "the City of David," "the Eternal City" and "the City of Peace." We learn of David and Solomon; Herod the Great; the Western or Wailing Wall; the Temple Mount, or Noble Sanctuary by Muslims, and Dome of the Rock; the Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Armenian quarters; Christian shrines such as the Church of All Nations at the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Outside the city, located at the foot of Mount Herzl on the Mount of Remembrance, is Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Our historical and culture tour continues in Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity, where the birth of Jesus Christ is noted all year long; then to the Dead Sea, which is nearly 1400 feet below sea level; lastly, our stone-guided tour appropriately concludes at the ancient fortress known as Masada, where we learn the story of the Great Jewish Revolt against the Romans.
