Colombia: La Guajira

Colombia: La Guajira

La Guajira is an isolated area located in the northeastern part of Colombia; it borders the Caribbean Sea to the north and east, and Venezuela and the Gulf of Maracaibo to the west. The peninsula is sparsely populated by indigenous Guajiros (also called Wayuu) who live in the arid land here, though are they are clannish and nomadic people who also roam into Venezuela; they are considered citizens of both countries. This classic program documents life among these native people who have survived the harsh elements of their desert environment for centuries. Here we learn their history, which is legendary, dating back before the arrival of the Spanish, and although they often have contact with Spanish-speaking people, they retain their own language, as well as many of their traditional customs. Also we discover, during the rainy season, the Guajiros travel to Maracaibo, Venezuela, where they find work at the Manaure Salt Mines and trade goods at the Los Filous Market.
