16. Alien (ESL and Understanding Differences)

Fitting in is never easy in any group when you don't know or aren't skilled in the group's language; this can be especially true for English as a Second Language students. Insensitive individuals can make an ESL student feel as if he or she were an alien from another planet. That is exactly the point of this program, which tells the story of one particular ESL student who experiences the feelings of trepidation and rejection that many young people have when they move from English as Second Language classes into regular classes. The message is brought home when the drama club acts out this scenario for a play. In the end students gain a greater awareness of the pressures ESL students are under; also ESL students learn how to combat the feelings of isolation they may experience. 00/08DE IJS 30 min.
