19. Kelly's Story (Child's Rights and Sexual Abuse)

Sexual abuse is never an easy topic. It's even more difficult when it occurs within families. This sensitive program explores the rights of children to a safe home environment, freedom from abuse, and the help that is available to them through services put in place to protect those rights. It also looks at the rights of children in permanent care and demystifies the legal process. Here we meet Jesse, who is reunited with Kelly, a teen he met when temporarily placed in a foster home. Kelly confides in Jesse that she suspects her stepfather is sexually abusing her younger sister, Samantha. Ignoring Jesse's advice to report her suspicions to her social worker, Kelly decides the solution is to run away with Samantha. After a frantic search, Jesse locates Kelly and this time convinces her to report the abuse. Kelly does, learning in the meantime of her and Samantha's rights to protection and to a safe home environment. 00/08DE IJS 30 min.
