Peru: Tools for Development (Business, Foreign Aid, Common Sense)

Peru: Tools for Development (Business, Foreign Aid)

Economically, Peru is a developing country with nearly 40% of its population at the poverty level. Villa El Salvador (VES), which began as a shantytown outside of Lima in the early 1970s, has evolved into a largely self-serving urban zone thanks to the efforts of two friends - from two very different worlds - who worked together to overcome severe hardships to launch a development plan here to provide small businesses a shot at economic self-sufficiency, using business, foreign aid and common sense. Sadly, we learn how one activist, María Elena Moyano, who helped organize a federation of women, which helped start public kitchens throughout the country, was killed by members of the extremist group Shining Path; however, her dream of opportunity for others lives on through programs such as "The Tools Project," which was also supported by CARE, International. Narrated by John Tarzwell. Produced by A. John Watson and Angela Mackay. 05/09DE JSCA 30 min.
