A Chinese Craft (Chinese Traditions)

Chinese Craft, A (Chinese Traditions)

"Recommended. The viewer is taken to a Joss-Stick factory, a marble stamp maker's studio, and a clog maker's shop in Malaysia. Each of these crafts has been passed down through Chinese tradition, and exemplifies the multicultural heritage of Malaysia." -EMRO Review
Certain special objects and artifacts are essential to keep ancient Chinese traditions alive. To fulfill that need, special people with skilled and talented hands, and a desire to celebrate their cultural heritage, maintain these arcane, yet essential, industries. In this program we first visit a "Joss-Stick" factory, where we learn about this ancient stick incense made from bamboo and used in East Asia and Southeast Asia. They are traditionally burned before a Chinese religious idol or shrine, sending a smoke signal to the gods, but also are an everyday practice burned in front of doors or open windows. There are various types of joss sticks used for many different purposes. Next we meet a marble stamp carver and watch him painstakingly work at his craft, creating a traditional marker that is still used in various Asian countries. Also we meet a wooden clog maker. Clogs we learn are carved shoes, which make noise that legend says scares away evil spirits when worn. 00/10DE JSCA 30 min.
