Home Sweet Home (Malaccan Bakery)

Home Sweet Home (Malaccan Bakery)

This is the story of the Malaccan "Baba Nyonya" community, descendants of people who left China centuries ago, and its special pastries. Here we visit a coconut plantation, where we meet young men who climb the coconut trees daily to extract the sap from the trees' flower buds, which is then boiled down to make Gula Melaka, known in English as Palm Sugar or Malacca Sugar, which is very popular and used in many dishes in Southeast Asia. We visit a local cake factory where we see brightly colored cakes made from coconut milk and Gula Melaka and discover that most of these factories are family owned; we too learn that the pastries and other foods, such as spring rolls, made here mix ancient Chinese recipes with traditional Malayan tastes. 00/10DE JSCA 30 min.
