Honorary Trustees Award: Arthur Roy "Mitch" Mitchell -The Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center
Arthur Roy Mitchell (1889-1977), who was born on a homestead west of Trinidad, Colorado, began sketching scenes of cowboy life when he as a teen and became a renowned western artist and historian. His story is quite unique. After serving in the Army in WW I, he studied art in New York City with leading illustrators of the time. His great knowledge of the Old West paid off and eventually he became nationally known as the “King of the Pulps” with his illustrations of cowboy life seen on the front covers of over 200 magazines. When he was 54 he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and returned to his beloved roots in Trinidad. Miraculously, he lived for 35 more years. He continued to paint, established the art department at Trinidad State Jr. College, where he taught for 15 years; also he helped develop Trinidad’s Baca House/Bloom Mansion/Pioneer Museum complex. This excellent profile of the artist's life provides a deep appreciation of his work as an illustrator of western magazines and a new understanding of the Old West. Produced by the A.R. Mitchell Museum. 05/10DE JSCA 30 min.
