Crossing the (20th) Century (cc)

Crossing the (20th) Century (cc)

The generation poised on the threshold of the twentieth century faced an uncertain future, as slow-paced nineteenth-century life crumbled under the onrush of mechanization. Yet the marvels of the twentieth century promised renewed hope and undreamed-of prosperity. In this program we cross from one century to the next in worlds of those who made the journey, viewing pivotal events that changed the shape of our lives. We witness this unique time of telegraphs and telephones; street railways and automobiles; coal stoves and electricity. We learn of Harry Buckwalter, the photojournalist who perfected x-ray imagery; Nikola Tesla's electrical experiments with the world's largest transformer; Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope (moving picture invention); and Big Bill Haywood, a leader of the U.S. working class. We look industrialization and pollution; workers and unions; and remember the bloody Cripple Creek miners' strike by the Western Federation of Miners; also alcohol prohibition; as well as the changing role of women, who eventually gained the right to vote. 01/08DE/CC Closed-Captioned IJSCA 30 min.
