Glimpses From the Past (Portuguese Descendants)

Glimpses From the Past (Portuguese Descendants)

The Portuguese from 1511 to 1641 controlled the city of Malacca (Melaka) in Malaysia; its strategic location helped give Portugal control over the main Asiatic trade routes during those Colonial days. Portuguese men were encouraged to marry the local females and over time a strong Eurasian community grew here. Today, the descendants of the Portuguese of Malacca (Melaka) and other towns of Malaysia speak a Creole Portuguese dialect (Papia Kristang), and though Islam is the largest as well as the official religion of the federation, many of the Eurasian community are Christians and have Portuguese surnames. In this program we meet a number of Portuguese descendants who are proud of their exotic history, unique culture, and remarkable cuisine. We discover an unusual technique of catching baby shrimps, which is a particular feature of this special community; also we view members of the community enjoying Portuguese dances and music, a common occurrence in the Portuguese settlement. 00/10DE IJSCA 30 min.
