Jabiluka - Aboriginal Swindle (Australian Uranium Mining)

Jabiluka - Aboriginal Swindle (Australian Uranium Mining)

The lure of Uranium, the world's most dangerous mineral, has proved irresistible to successive Australian governments who dismiss the aboriginal Mirrar people's objections to the Jabiluka mine, which is surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park. Twice Academy Award nominated director, David Bradbury (Frontline and Chile: Hasta Cuando?) explores the effects of this cultural devastation on the lives of a people and a land inextricably joined. This is a classic "land rights" controversy: the Federal Government of Australia, the government of the Northern Territory, the mining company Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) and the Northern Land Council all want the uranium mining to go ahead, while the Mirrar continue to protest. Aside from the fact that the Mirrar consider Jabiluka sacred land, there too are the issues of the wetlands and radioactivity that need to be addressed. Produced by Frontline Films. 2008 JSCA 45 min.
