Chile: Fighting the Past (Polarized Politics)

Chile: Fighting the Past (Polarized Politics)

Best Documentary! -FICA Festival
"Recommended. This documentary focuses on the rift in Chile between Pinochet's advocates and opponents; it is a fine program that forces the viewer to reflect on the abuse of political power. It is recommended for those with a keen interest in ethical issues in South American history and political science." -EMRO Review
General Augusto Pinochet was the iron-fisted ruler of Chile from 1973 until 1990. His arrest exposed the frightening hatreds between the political left and right in Chile. While the left reminded the world of Pinochet's horrific crimes, the right demanded that the horrors be put in their proper context. "These were not atrocities, the argument runs, but excesses; the kind of things people do to restore order and attain economic success in a harsh environment." Pinochet died before ever being convicted of any crimes, although numerous investigations were ongoing. This powerful and comprehensive report uses the Pinochet case to reveal the divides that still affect Chilean society; interspersed too are scenes from a theatrical performance based on human rights' abuses. We view the history of Chile back to the days of Salvador Allende, a socialist and Marxist, who became president of Chile in 1970 but was killed in the coup d'├ętat led by Pinochet in 1973. We meet the Chilean senator Evelyn Matthei, an economist and politician, as well as her father, Fernando Matthei, a retired Air Force General, who was a member of the junta that took power in the coup. We too hear the heart wrenching stories by family members victimized during the Pionchet dictatorship, including the son of Marcos Orlando Letelier del Solar, who was assassinated in Washington, D.C. by Chilean DINA agents.
