Just east of Russia, Estonia is a Baltic Republic that has experienced difficult times, but whose people are working hard to improve their way of life. In this program we first meet Miikael Magila, 11, who lives in Tallinn with his musically talented family; we listen to him play the piano and also practicing his singing for the Estonia Boy's Choir. Next we meet Tanel Toom, 12, who lives on the family farm on the second largest island in Estonia, Hiiumaa; here he helps his grandfather driving a tractor, fishing and picking wild strawberries. Next we travel to the ancient capital of Tallinn; the country's largest city, it is located on the northern coast on the banks of the Gulf of Finland, and only 50 miles south of neighboring Helsinki, Finland. It is a well-preserved medieval city that has preserved many of its narrow winding streets with cobbled pavement. We attend a Baltic Music Festival and witness a variety of musical performers. Then Tanel and his friends close the program singing an Estonian folk song. 00/08DE PIJ 30 min.
