Hong Kong

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is largely a self-governing territory made up of over 300 islands located on China's south coast; however most of its population and urban development can be found on Kowloon peninsula along the northern edge of Hong Kong Island. Famous as a commercial center where East meets West; Hong Kong is one of Asia's most important and busy cities. In this program we meet 14-year-old Yvonne Leung who starts off the program performing a traditional Chinese song with the Hong Kong Children's Choir; she also introduces us to Chinese cooking, how to write using Chinese characters, and the fishing village of Tai Ho; then we explore Ocean Park, one of the most popular amusement parks in the world, which features Ocean Tower and a Gondola system; both overlook the park, the city and the South China Sea; also we witness the performances of several Chinese acrobats. On Landau Island we observe the largest Buddha statue in the world along with examples of Chinese monasteries; then Yvonne dances a traditional Chinese dance in costume. Next we meet Cheng Shu Hong; we view adults T'ai Chi Ch'uan exercises in a park; then see a Lion Dance, which is an important part of Kung Fu; then we conclude the program listening to children playing a variety of Chinese musical instruments. 00/08DE PIJ 30 min.
