The Republic of Albania is located in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula, northeast of Greece, bordering the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. This program is an opportunity for children to learn of this relatively small European country, which was long isolated from the rest of the world. First, we travel to the coastal city of Durrës, which is the 2nd largest city in the country, and meet 8-year-old Mandi, who lives there with his large family; we get to view the city as Mandi walks to school, as well as its ancient amphitheater. Then we visit the historic town of Krujë, which includes a restored castle, citadel and bazaar area; plus the Skanderbeg Museum that is named after the Albanian national hero. Next we meet Anisa, whose main responsibility when she's not in school is to care for her family's cows; also we view her aunt weaving, one of the country's popular traditional crafts. We encounter Gypsy children, Tedy, who tends a roadside stand, and Akili, who drives a horse-drawn cart, on our way to the capital, Tirana, where we are reminded that although Albania remains a poor country there are signs of potential for economic growth. 00/08DE PIJ 30 min.
