Norway 2: Oslo

Norway 2: Oslo

Offering one of the most dramatic settings in Europe, complete with coastline and fjords, Oslo is the cultural and financial center of Norway; and with Jake and Mieke deBoer as our guides that is just the beginning. Here we find the famous Kon Tiki Museum, celebrating Thor Hyerdahl's 57-day voyage in 1970 across the Atlantic from Morocco to Barbados on a papyrus boat named the RA2; then we visit the incredibly moving (Gustav) Vigeland Sculpture Park, an outdoor museum filled with never duplicated works of art by Norway's greatest sculptor. Next, the Norwegian Folk Museum, built entirely of wood, allows one to virtually visit the whole country in a single day. Located on the waterfront, the Oslo City Hall building is situated in the city center, within walking distance of the Royal Palace and the Parliament building, and reflects the historic role of Oslo as the capital of a seafaring nation. It is an architectural masterpiece, complete with hand-painted walls and incredible stone floors. Also we learn the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded here each year on the 10th of December. 03/09DE IJSCA 20 min.
