Lebanon: Hijacker in the Family

Lebanon: Hijacker in the Family

One of the 19 September 11, 2001, hijackers identified by the FBI was a Lebanese man, Ziad Samir Jarrah, who it is believed took over as the pilot of the United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania. What's disturbing about Jarrah is he does not fit the expected profile of a terrorist: he came from a well-off, middle-class family who held relatively liberal beliefs, not those of a religious fanatic. Some maintained he couldn't have been involved; however, the evidence nonetheless weighed against Jarrah. Though a short documentary, its message is clear and comes from Sarid Khazen of American University in Beirut: "these people are not your classic terrorists: They come from well-off families and are not destitute, poor individuals." We learn, as proof of Jarrah's involvement gets more compelling by the day, it is not just his family, but people all around the world, who struggle to understand such a person. Produced by ABC Australia. 01/10DE JSCA 10 min.
