Argentina: Middle Class Revolt

Argentina: Middle Class Revolt

Argentina is the second largest country by land area in South America, eighth in the world, with a population of over 40 million people. Economically, the country struggled most of the 20th century, but today is making new strides. However, the road to new reforms was not an easy one. This classic documentary takes us to Argentina to investigate how the middle class revolted against the politicians who Argentines claimed were responsible for the economic ruin of their nation. Here we see that chaos that hit the streets of Buenos Aires; also, outside the center of the city, illegal bartering flourished, ignored by the government because it fulfilled the daily needs of millions of Argentines. Barter certainly was not a long-term solution to the country's economic problems and noisy protests erupted. Elisa Carrio failed in her attempt as candidate for the presidency; however the middle class revolt did lead to Cristina Fernández de Kirchner becoming the first woman to ever be elected President of Argentina.
