The Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt, The

The Thunderbolt refers to the P-47 fighter-bombers that were used by the Corsica-based 57th Fighter Group during the Italian Campaign of World War II. This huge plane, also known as the "Jug," was the largest single-engine fighter of its time; it was the fastest-diving American aircraft of the war, reaching speeds of 550 mph, which made it very effective in air combat; and with four .50-caliber machine guns on each wing it was excellent at ground attack. This classic documentary by the Oscar winning director William Wyler was the last of the U.S. Army Air Corps Major's wartime directorial efforts; it concentrates on the Thunderbolt's role during "Operation Strangle" and the assault against the Nazi stronghold at Monte Cassino, a series of important air operations, which helped prevent essential supplies to reach German forces during this campaign. For the courage displayed in shooting this and several other WW II documentaries, under the most life threatening of situations, Wyler earned an Air Medal and a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.
