Palestine: Chairman Yasser Arafat

Palestine: Chairman Yasser Arafat

Yasser Arafat (1929-2004) - his complete name was Mohammed Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa Al-Husseini - was Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which the Arab League regards as the only legitimate representative of the Palestinian people; President of the Palestinian National Authority, which was established to govern parts of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip; and leader of the Fatah political party, which he founded in 1959. Fatah in Arabic means "conquest by means of jihad - Islamic holy war" - although the political party renounced involvement in terrorism back in 1988 and today is not considered a terrorist organization. During his lifetime, Arafat was enigmatic. While most Palestinians considered him a "freedom fighter," many Israelis considered him a terrorist leader. Later in his career, he engaged in negotiations to end the conflict between Israel and the PLO and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 along with Israel's Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres. In this program Middle East correspondent Chris Clark offers a candid profile of Arafat, combining the Chairman of the PLO's comments along with the perspectives of Marwan Barghouti, the former head of Fatah in the West Bank, who today is serving 5 life sentences in Israel, yet has been re-elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in absentia; Mounier Maqdah, the former head of the Fatah militia in Lebanon, now head of Fatah security; and Sari Nussebeh, a Palestinian professor of philosophy and president of the Al-Quds University in Jerusalem. Retrospectively, we see firsthand the complexity of the situation between the Israelis and Palestinians, while gaining an insight into the position of Palestinian leaders.
