Cyprus: A Divided Island

Cyprus: A Divided Island

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia, situated in the east Mediterranean basin just south of Turkey and west of Greece. The Republic gained its independence from Britain in 1960; however, after a coup in 1974 nearly 40% of the island remained under Turkish rule. Today, the island remains divided: the south is effectively controlled by the Republic of Cyprus; the north calls itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognized only by Turkey; the United Nations controls a Green Line that separate the two; also there are two British Sovereign Base Areas - in Akrotiri and Dhekelia. This program provides an historical perspective of the "Cyprus Problem," offering the viewpoints of the former Greek Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides and the former Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktash. Produced by ABC Australia. 08/11DE JSCA 20 min.
