Argentina: Nation on the Brink

Argentina: Nation on the Brink

"Highly Recommended. Focusing on Argentina's economy and turbulent politics, this program contrasts the situation of its poor against the opulent lifestyle of former Peronist president Carlos Menem and includes an interview with the former opposition leader, Elisa Carrio. It offers insight into the country's relationship with the world economy and free market politics." -School Library Journal
Argentina remained neutral during World War II and political change after the war led to the presidency of Juan Perón, whose wife, Eva Perón, known as Evita, was a driving force for the working class of the country until her untimely death in 1952; in the succeeding decades political chaos and violence was common. In 1989 the Peron-leaning Carlos Menem was elected and Argentina's struggling economy made a turnaround during his 10-year tenure as president. However, the new millennium brought a sea of debt and despair, which led to a call for major changes. This classic program documents a meeting with Menem and his former wife, the model Cecilia Bolocco, who, at his private estate, was contemplating running again for the presidency; plus we meet the plain speaking Elisa Carrio, who opposed Menem as a candidate in 2003; then ran a distant second in 2007 to Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who became the first woman ever elected President of Argentina. Produced by ABC Australia. 03/08DE JSCA 30 min.
