5. India: Khajuraho's Ancient Temples (Beyond Erotica)

"Recommended. Khajuraho, a beautiful historical town situated in central India, is famous for its magnificent temples built more than a thousand years ago by Chandela kings. These temples represent some of the most exquisite architecture and sculpture of medieval India; however, they are most popularly known for erotic sculpture, which constitutes less than ten percent of the entire configuration. This documentary is based on research conducted by art historian and expert on Khajuharo, Dr. Devangana Desai; it highlights the contributions made by Khajuharo to the world of ancient art and also focuses on interpreting religious symbolism in order to correct the misrepresentations made by popular media and the tourist industry. The viewer is presented with architectural and sculptural details of the temples along with a closer view of the intricate details of carved imagery that decorate the temple walls. Dr. Desai provides detailed descriptions of icons found in two main temples with additional information about the sculpture; she then moves onto her interpretation of erotic images and explains how art has been used to express philosophical theory. She traces prevalence of Tantric systems during the Chandela dynasty and highlights the importance of understanding the deeper religious meaning underlying the artwork. The visuals include beautiful images of the temples and the surrounding village." -EMRO Review
Based on the research of scholar and author Dr. Devangana Desai, this documentary presents an intelligent and adult perspective on the ancient temples of Khajuraho, which have been misrepresented for over three centuries in the West as vulgar and obscene depictions of human desire. By tracing the philosophy behind the architecture, this program transcends religion and eroticism. It traces Tantrism, a sect of Hinduism that believed in Shakti, or the female energy being the key element of structure in the cosmos, which helps explain the female figures in and around the temples. Produced by Ashok Ojha. 03/09DE CA 25 min.
