December 7, 1941

December 7, 1941

December 7, 1941, is best known in history as the day the Japanese Navy carried off a surprise attack of the United States' Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, sinking four U.S. Navy battleships, damaging four others, sinking or damaging three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer; also destroying 188 aircraft and killing 2,402 and wounding 1,282. The action led President Franklin D. Roosevelt to proclaim "December 7, 1941, as a date which will live in infamy" and prompted the U.S. to declare war on Japan, militarily involving the country in World War II. This classic program documents the tragic events of the day. 43/08DE JSCA 33 min.
