The Battle of Russia

Battle of Russia, The

Academy Award Nominee: Best Documentary
Narrated by Walter Huston and directed by Frank Capra, this Oscar-nominated, digitally re-mastered classic documentary is from the series of films commissioned by the United States during World War II, "Why We Fight." Originally released in two parts, the film begins by offering an historical overview of Russia, covering the many failed attempts to conquer the country from the 13th century to Napoleon in the 19th century to Germany in World War I. U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur commends the Russian's defense of their nation as one of the most courageous feats in military history. Part two shows how the strategy to attempt to take Russia spells the beginning of the end for Adolph Hitler as the Red Army's scorched-earth strategy, along with a reliance on guerilla and urban warfare as a method of fighting, handed Nazi Germany a crippling defeat. Directed by Frank Capra. 43/08DE JSCA 83 min.
